digi4eco – A digital twin of the ocean

digi4eco - A digital twin of the ocean

DIGI4ECO, Digital Twin-sustained 4D Ecological Monitoring of Restoration in Fishery Depleted Areas, is a pioneering initiative aimed at unlocking new discoveries crucial for addressing climate change and regulating human activities. The mission is to harness the power of digital technology to advance environmental conservation and socio-economic development, by means of networks of robotic platforms, tailored for restoration efforts in fishery-depleted areas. These platforms can collect data to build digital twins for expanding our understanding of the 4D changes of marine ecosystems.

ATU’s main contribution will be to facilitate the integration of environmental DNA (eDNA) data into a digital twin framework. Experimentation will take place in collaboration with the Marine Institute at the SmartBay cabled observatory in Galway Bay. ATU researchers include PI Dr Luca Mirimin and postdoctoral researchers Dr Maddalena Tibone and Dr Eleonora Cariolato.

DIGI4ECO has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under grant agreement No 101112883 on the topic HORIZON-MISS-2022-OCEAN-01-07 – Integration of biodiversity monitoring data into the Digital Twin Ocean. The consortium consists of lead coordinator CSIC (Spain) and 17 partners across Spain, Italy Denmark, Cyprus, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, and France.

The project will be active from 2024 to 2028.
