The FLOW project aims to address declining water quality in 4 priority catchments on a cross-border basis in support of the 3rd Cycle of River Basin Management Plans (2021–2027) (RBMP) and addressing agricultural pressures, wastewater discharge and citizen activities”, through:
- Working with agri-businesses, including farmers, to encourage nutrient reduction
- Developing measures to reduce sediment from soil erosion and surface run off
- Addressing pressures from sewage infrastructure through capital investment in NbS and in a new wastewater treatment facility at Rossinver, Co. Leitrim
- Preventing / controlling adverse impacts of invasive & alien species.
- Undertaking education and awareness activities for community led action, through local primary schools and community associations in particular.
The project commenced as of the 1st July 2025 and will run until the 30th June 2029.
Awarded €5.16 million under PEACEPLUS Investment Area 5.3, “Water Quality and Catchment Management”.
The consortium is led by Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN) and partners include ATU, Ulster University, River Basin Management Service (formerly LAWPRO), Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), Leitrim County Council, Ballinderry Rivers Trust, and the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI), and the Garrison and Lough Melvin Anglers Association as Associate Partners.
ATU’s PIs are Dr Luca Mirimin, Dr Nicolas Touzet and Prof Frances Lucy.
ATU researchers are Ms Paige Kenny (PhD candidate) and XXX (postdoctoral fellow).
