Process-based Assessment for the Good Environmental Status (PAGES)

The PAGES project (Process-based Assessment for the Good Environmental Status) will introduce an integrated, process-based approach to enhance MSFD monitoring strategies by diagnosing biodiversity within specific ocean dynamics. Providing proof-of-concepts, PAGES aims to influence national MSFD observation frameworks, shifting from conventional sampling to process-driven monitoring.

PAGES intends:
• to fully exploit samples and data collected during both S4GES and BIOTREC-Tara cruises, as well as possibly from additional field work with a suitable sampling strategy;
• to set new oceanographic cruises that will seek to assess the GES over regions that are characterize by specific physical and biogeochemical dynamics, linking the dots among hydrographic, biogeochemical, and biological data pursuing and adaptive sampling strategy;
• to reinforce the outcomes of the JPI-O Action S4GES by providing a solid and generalized science based proof-of-concept for an efficient and effective assessment of the marine Good Environmental Status.

ATU will contribute primarily to technical and scientific deliverables of the project, including biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA (eDNA).
