Dr Julien Carlier

Postdoctoral Researcher

I joined the MFRC in 2020 as Post-doctoral researcher on the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine funded HNV_FarmForBio project. This role includes assessing ecosystem quality and modelling incentives to maintain and enhance high value nature farmland and forest in Ireland. I hold an Honours degree and PhD in Environmental Science at ITSligo. My doctoral research focused on the sustainable development of Greenway infrastructure as multi-functional ecological corridors. Current research interests include biodiversity conservation, ecosystem dynamics, image pattern and morphological assessment, and improving knowledge base for strategic planning. My expertise lies in landscape connectivity and characterisation, remote sensing, habitat quality assessment and ecological modelling. I am a member of the Agro-ecology and Rural Development (ARD) research group within the MFRC in partnership with ITSligo. My wider interests are in rural community development, environmental outreach and sustainable tourism development.

Across Europe High Nature Value farmland and forests (HNVFF) support high biodiversity including various rare and threatened species. The HNV_FarmForBio project will identify, characterise and map the national extent of HNV farmland and forest areas.
