Trophic diversity in marine protected areas

From the microbiome to the ecosystem: unravelling the effects of marine protected areas through the lens of trophic diversity (METRODIVER)

The METRODIVER project (2020-2023) aims to: 1) model the effects of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on trophic diversity and functioning, 2) identify aspects of MPA design that influence this relationship and 3) determine to what extent protection of trophic diversity by MPAs drives the delivery of ecosystem services and mediates fish health, and ultimately human health. The MFRC are the Irish partners on this collaboration. METRODIVER is co-ordinated by Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, France) with partners in Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) and Aarhus University (Denmark).

METRODIVER is supported by the BiodivERsA ERA-NET cofund. GMIT’s involvement is funded under the EPA Research Programme 2014-2020. The EPA Research Programme is a Government of Ireland initiative funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.
