Aisha Phillips

Research Assistant
PhD student

Aisha is a research assistant with the McDevitt lab group on a project focused on optimising non-invasive genetic monitoring of badger populations in Ireland. She has a BSc (Hons) in Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology from ATU Galway and a previous degree in Environmental Science with Ecology from ATU Sligo.

Her honours thesis was conducted in collaboration with the Marine Institute and investigated the role of the major effect loci, vgll3 and six6, in determining sea-age at maturity in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the Burrishoole catchment. She has a background in invasive species projects using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis and is passionate about advancing molecular tools for conservation. She is especially interested in engaging people in science and working to develop evidence-based strategies for conserving Ireland’s biodiversity.

Outside of work, she enjoys birdwatching and sailing, and is currently developing a citizen science cetacean identification app called FinFinder which has been funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
